General Surgery

Introduction : The dept. of Surgery has been functioning since inception of hospital and has grown exponentially with passage of time. The dept. has kept pace with newer technologies, procedures. The Dept. has grown to include all super-specialties viz. Plastic, Pediatric, Urology, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic/Vascular surgery. Today the dept. is well equipped to cater to all forms of surgery on par with any Tertiary Care Hospital.

Milestones :Minimally Invasive surgery was introduced in country in 1991-92 and since 1994 the Minimal Invasive (Laparoscopic) surgery is available at our hospital.

Microsurgery in Neurosurgery, ENT surgeries is also available since then. Dedicated Gyne.Lap. Surgery unit is also available in hospital. Dr. B.M.L KapurOne of most Senior Onco-surgeon has been associated with hospital for past 28 yrs. till date. Many stalwarts like Dr.Sehgal in Neurosurgery, Dr. S.S. Sethi in Plastic surgery, Dr. S.K. Chadha in CTVS have all been associated with department in the past.

Facilities :The department has facilities to cater to all emergency and planned operations 24 X 7. The Emergency admissions from our large 28 bedded casualty are run by Senior & Junior Residents under supervision of SR/Consultant on call.Subsidised beds are available so that no patient is denied surgery for economic reason.

General and Private OPDs are conducted daily (except Sunday) both in morning and evenings in Gen. Surgery and specialties. There are 7 operating suites available to cater to patients. Minor operation theatre is also available in casualty during morning and afternoon.

A six bedded post-op unit takes care for post-surgery period for all major case requiring intensive monitoring.

Procedures/Therapies :All major/minor surgeries like Cholecystectomy, Hernia, Renal Stones, Prostate, Appendectomy, cancer of stomach, colon, pancreas etc. are performed. Many of the above surgeries are done Laparoscopically. In specialties, head injuries/brain tumors, spinal surgery, skin grafting, neonatal surgeries, congenital defects like TOF, impentrate anus, Hirsch-including spinning disease are commonly operated. Various Thoracic procedures like decortication etc. alongwith vascular bypass etc. are done under CTVS. Recently Laser Endosurgery for varicose veins was also performed. CABG's, Valve
Replacement and entire spectrum of Adult Cardiac Surgery is performed.

The hospital was among the first in North India in late 80s to introduce Endoscopic Urology procedure like TURP, PCNL and URSL.

Clinical Team :There are 2 Senior Consultants in Gen. Surgery headed by Dr. P. Chadha. Dr. R. Sethi is the other Senior Consultant. In addition there are 2 Junior Consultants. There are atleast 2 Senior Consultants in each super-specialties.

In addition there are 5 Senior Residents and 4 Junior Residents. Gen. surgery has been conducting PG Training DNB programme since 1996. The dept. is allotted one DNB candidate every year for its Post-graduate training.
